Abstract

713. Prestige, J. T., and Mead, A. A. Jan. 9. Ventilators, terminal. -Ventilating - means for railway carriages &c. comprise a hit-andmiss grating behind a louver ventilator, the devices being interconnected so that they open and close simultaneously. The louver slats 8 fit into thimbles 9 provided with pivot pins 10 stepped on balls 11 located in recesses in the lower frame member 2. The upper thimbles 12 are formed with forked extensions 15 adapted to be engaged by depending pins 16 on an horizontal bar 17 by means of which the louvers are simultaneously actuated. The vertical slots 6 in the fixed member of the hit-andmiss ventilator are situated behind the pivots of the louvers so that cinders &c. which pass through the louver strike the solid parts 6<a> and fall through the space between the ventilators. The sliding portion 4 is provided with an operating-handle 21 working in a slot 22. The ventilators are linked together by an arm 23 on the slide 4 taking over a stud 25 on one of the forked extensions 15. Arrangements are also made whereby the ventilators may be actuated from the outside.
