To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED L. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburyport, in the county OfESSGX and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ventilators and more particularly to window ventilators.
The object of the invention is to provide a device employing a valve for regulating the amount of ventilation, which may be adjusted to accommodate the device to different sized windows and which is so constructed that as the device isadjusted the valve is also adjusted.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character having means for holding the valve in adjusted position, whereby the proper amount of ventilation may be readily secured.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is an inside elevation of the device shown applied to a window. Fig. 2 is an outside elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is an end elevation. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail elevation'of the valve and its hinge. v
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the separate sections of the device, each having atop, generally indicated at a side 4 and an end 5., The top of each member is provided with a pluralit-y of aperturesG in a portionthereof and immediately adjacent the apcrtured portion the top of each member is depressed to form a sash scat 7 and a shoulder 8 which abuts against the inner face of the lower rail of the sash. The member, 1 is of somewhat larger dimensions than the member 2,.so that the latter member can telescope therein, as shown, and the outer edges of the top and side of the member have inwardly turned flanges 9 which lap over the outer edges of the top and side of the member 2. These flanges are connected together at the end of the member 1 by a brace 10, and a similar brace 11 connects the side and top of the free end of the section 2.
Each member has.projecting from its end a spacing frame 12 whose upper edge is flush with the seat -7 and whose lower edge conforms to the outline of the side 4 of the members 1 and 2. These frames are substantially U-shaped in horizontal cross section and are of sutlicientwidth to properly engage between the retaining strip and the parting head of the sash frame as shown, whereby the ventilator is prevented from becoming disengaged with the frame when the sash is resting upon the seat 7. The col lapsing movement of the sections is limited by the end of the section 2 coming into con-- tact with the closed end. of the section 1- while the outward or expansible movement of the section is limited by a lug 13 carried upon the section 2 and adapted to abut against the brace 10. This prevents disconnection of the parts.
A valve 1+1: is shownextending from the bottom portion of the side 4 to the top of the deviceand limited in its outward movement by the shoulder. This valve is constructed. of separate sections 15 and 16, the latter of which telescopes Within flanges 17 upon the section 15 so as to be adjustable with the sections 1 and 2. The section 16 is provided with a stub shaft 18 through the end 5 and provided with a head 19, while the section 15 is provided with a stub shaft 20 which projects through the end section 1 and terminates in a. laterally extending lever 21 which operates over a locking segment 22. This segment is formed of suitable resilient material having its-body portion separated from the end 5 and its ends secured thereto. The body portion is serrated or corrugated, so as to'cause the lever 21 to snap over the corrugations, whereby the valve will be held in its adjusted position. The headed stub shaft 18 prevents relative longitudinal movement. of
the section 16 upon the. section 2 and the laterally extending lever 21 on the stub shaft 20 prevents relative longitudinal movement of the section 15 upon the section 1. Therefore, as the sections 1 and 2 are moved apart the sections of the valve are also separated so that in all adjustments of the sections 1 and 2 the valve will extend across the entire device and be operative to regulate the amount of air admitted to the room.
The inner end of the valve section 15 is supported upon a link hinge. 23, the lower leaf 24 of which is supported upon the bottom of the section 2, while the upper leaf roj-ecting Q 25 is secured to the section 15 of the valve. This hinge prevents sagging of the parts of the hinge and permits them to telescope properly when the sections of the ventilator are adjusted.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is I 1. -A ventilator comprising a pair of telescoping sections each having apertures and an open side, means to brace the open side apart; and a limiting device carried-by one of the sides and adapted to engage the brace to limitthe extensive movement of the sections.
2. A ventilator comprising a pair of telescoping casing sections each having apertures and an open side, anoffset sash seat formed on said sections, an open casing frame carried by said sections and having its top flush with the seat, a telescoping valve pivotally mounted in said section, between the apertures and open side and adapted to control the passage of air from the open side to the apertures, a link pivoted to the casing and to the free end of one of the valve sections, a lever carried by the valve and projecting through one of the sections, and a resilient corrugated segment engaged by the lever for holding-the valve in adjusted position.
