SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,160, dated February 4, 1896.

Be it known that I, CHARLES WHIrLow, residing in the city of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Window Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved ventilator for car-windows of that class which are designed to be inserted under the partially-raised sash, and the improvement is especially intended for use on Pullman and similar parlor-cars in which a comparatively wide window is used; and the invention has for an object to provide a ventilator in which the admission of air may be regulated at either end of the window, in which the incoming air will be protected by an external hood or hoods, and in which the hood protecting one air-inlet section is independent or free of communication with the adjacent hood, so the draft resulting from the movement of the car, or otherwise, cannot pass from one hood to the other to produce too strong a draft through the ventilating opening or section at the rear with respect to the direction of motion of the car.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a face view of the ventilator in place in a'window. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the ventilator. Fig. 3 is a section on about line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the ventilator, and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view showing the venu tilator folded.
In the construction shown my ventilator is composed of the two frames A A, hinged at a at their meeting edges so they may readily fold face to face for compact storage, and they are provided at their hinged edges a with latches B, which serve to lock the same extended in position for use, such latches being preferably in the nature of turnebuttons, as shown. Each of these frames A is provided with a ventilator-section C independently adjustable by means of slats as shown, such adjusting or controlling slats being in the nature of Venetian blinds. It will be seen that each section is adjustable independently of the other, so that one may be entirely open and the other entirely closed, or both may be open or partially open to any desired extent, as occasion may require. These ventilating sections can be readily controlled `from within the car when the ventilator is in place beneath the sash.
Over the outer sides of the Ventilating-sections I provide hoods D, which incline outrear Ventilating-section subject to so strong a draft as to make its use objectionable and increase the difficulty of maintaining any desired adjustment of the slats thereof, except the full wide-open position.
In the use of my invention it will be seen that the ventilator can be conveniently applied to and removed from a window, can be compactly stored when not in use, can be so adjusted as to admit air in any desired 'quantity at either end of the window, and the independently adjustable ventilating-sections are so guarded externally as to avoid excessive draft upon the rear section of the ventil lator.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The window ventilator herein described consisting of the two wings hinged together at their meeting edges and each having ventilating-slats, the slats of each Wing being adjustable independently of those of the other wing, and overhanging hoods secured independently one to each wing over the ventilating-slats thereof, the adjacent ends of said hoods being closed whereby draft will not'pass from one to the other thereof all substantially as set forth.
