Description
7 E. HAMILTON. EXCLUDING DUST FROM RAILROAD CARS.
No. 8,121. 4 Patented May 2'']; 1851.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
EDWARD HAMILTON, OF BR IDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO H. GOODYEAR.
EXCLUDING FROM RAILROAD-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,121, dated May 27, 1851.
dow, to stand open in the direction in which the car is moving at an angle of about forty five degrees with the sides .of the car, by means of which a current of air is created from the inside of the car outward, thereby preventing the entrance of dust, cinders, smoke 620. into the same.
To enable others, skilled in theart, to
make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my rail roadcar in any of the known forms, and apply thereto all the ordinary appendages of such cars; the space between the windows of the same being about twelve inches, to accommodate the' blinds when folded together. But, in order to create a current of air from. the inside of the car outward, through the windows, when opened, thereby preventing the entrance of dust, cinders, smoke, &-c. into the same, I attach on the outside of the car, the vertical blinds or screens A, A, to the window frames D, D, or other adjacent parts, as
shown in the accompanying drawings. The
blinds are attached to the car by india rubber, or other hinges, extending the whole length of the blinds. To the upper ends of all the blinds on the same side of the windows, and the lower ends of all the blinds on the opposite sides of the windows, near the outer edges of the blinds, I attach rods B, upper rod, C, lower rod) running the whole length of the car, for the purpose of opening and closing the blinds. The rods are perforated at the'p laces where they are connected to the blinds, and fastened by means of pins F in the ends ofthe blinds. The upper rod operates one set of blinds, and the lower rod the other set, on the same side of the car. When the car is in motion, I open the blinds by means of the rods, the angle of about forty five degrees which the blinds make with the sides ofjthe car, opening in the direction in which the car is moving. A current of air through the open windows, from the inside of the car outward, is thereby created, the air entering the car through the ventilators E 011 the top of the car, and the entrance of dust, cinders, smoke, 620., into thecar thereby prevented.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The application of vertical blinds, shntters, or screens on the outside of rail road cars, employing the same to prevent the entrance of dust, smoke, cinders, &c., into the windows of the cars, as herein described.
. EDWVARD HAMILTON.
