DEFL EC'T'ORFO'R RA LRO'AD PASSENGER-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 286,381, dated October 9, 1883.
Application filed December 29 1882 (X0 model.)
To @125 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. Brann- ER-HOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upper Sandusky, in the county of My andot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deflectors thereon, which form a part of this specification.
- This invention has relation to improvements in deflectors for railroad-car windows; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims appended. v
The object of the present invention is to provide a cheap and simple means whereby a perfeet ventilation of the car may be had and the entrance of'dust, sparks, and the like through the open window prevented.
In the drawings, to which reference is made, similar letters are used to indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a representation of a perspcctive View of my device, showing the hinged sides or leaves open, as when in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same with the'upper hinged leaf and brace-rod let down. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspeetiveviews of a window-frame, showing my device applied; and Fig. 6 is an interior view of a car, showing the various applications of the deflector.
Referring to the drawings by letter, M indicates the frame of the deflector, which may be made of cast or wrought metal, papier-mach, or other suitable material. This frame is composed of horizontal parallel walls A A and a main deflector, B, which is secured in a vertical position diagonally between the said-walls,
and provided at one end with a vertical tenon,
a, designed to extend in the ordinary sashgroove of the window frame or easing.
Z) represents a.stay-rib arranged near one end upon the inner side of the main deflector,
,to prevent warping of the same. This main deflector is also provided, eccentrieally, upon its outer face with a hinge-rod carrying a deflector apron, D, which is bent at its forward end to extend over and engage the outer edge of the window-frame when in operation, and when-not in use is designed to be turned in upon the main deflector between the upper and lower walls of the frame or casing. The top and bottom sides or walls of the deflector are provided, respectively, upon their outer edges with longitudinal parallel strips a, the lower one of which is provided with a hinged brace-rod for holding the said strips in an outward horizontal position when the device is in use, and is designed to fold inward with the said strips and deflector-apron when prepared for transportation.
The frame of the deflector is designed to be about two-thirds the width of the windowframe, as this will leave an opening sufficient for a complete Ventilation of the ear, and will not materially obstruct the view of external surroundings when the device is in use.
In operation the window is raised sufficiently high for the admission of the deflector-frame, which is placed within the opening upon the sill of the window, with its transverse vertical flange or rib extending within the sash: groove, leaving the opening under the sash always toward the front of the train. The window is then let down upon the upper wall of the frame, when the deflector will be socurely held in proper posit-ion. W'ith the defiector thus in place, and the hinged apron D thrown outward to engage the outer edge of the window-frame, as described, the entrance of dust, sparks, eindcrs, and the like will be prevented, and at the same time pure air pen mittcd to pass through the ear.
G is a deflecting-surface, which is arranged in the front end of the frame, and is designed to operate in connection with the main deflector I).
If desired, a safety cord or chain 'inay be connected tothe deflector and secured at its opposite end to the upper portion of the windew-casing.
The deflector is easily adjusted, as for change of direction in the movement of the car.
Having thus described my invention, what I ,2 v v 286,3Sf
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters bined with the horizontal walls A A, which 7 terminate at one end in a tenon, a, for adjustgneit in the sash-groove, substantially as speci- 2. The combination, with the main wall or deflecting-surface B and the walls A A, of the adjustable deflecting-apron D, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the main wall or deflecting-surface B and the walls A A, of the forward and outward deflecting-surface, G, arranged in the front end of the frame, and the hinged deflector D, all substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. In a deflector substantially as described the combination, with the main frame or deflector B and walls A, of the hinged leaves a and hinged brace-rodF, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
ALEXANDER W. BRINKERHOFF.
