Abstract

463. Pasley, C. R. Jan. 6. Removing fibre from cotton seeds; scouring.- Cotton seeds are cleaned and the residual fibre removed therefrom in a cylinder A made in two parts hinged at N and lined with wood E or the like carrying a resilient layer preferably of fine steel wires F. The seed is operated on by a rotor B to which are pivoted centrifugal rubbers K of flexible material such as fabric of cotton, flax, or wire. Apertures H in the rotor, preferably fitted with hoods I, draw in air to carry away the fibre, which leaves by a pipe M. The seed enters at A' from a hopper W fitted with a pin-wheel L with a wiper L', and leaves by the passage A<2>. In the passage P is arranged a flap R which can be turned about the pin T to guide the seeds from the passage A<2> either into the inlet A<1> to be again treated or out of the machine bv a side shoot. The flap may be operated periodically by a cam &c. The inoperative part S of the drum A is lined with wood &c. According to the Provisional Specification, springs may be employed to assist the action of the rubbers K, a worm or reciprocating feeder may be used, and a number of machines may be used in series.
