[Addition to 463/12.] Removing fibre from cotton seeds; scouring.- In a modification of the machine for de-linting cotton seed described in the parent Specification, the flap R, Fig. 2, which when placed across the passage P between the outlet and inlet openings of the casing A causes the seed to be discharged, is operated periodically, and the feed-roller L is only in operation at corresponding intervals. The pivot T of the flap carries an arm 22 connected to a spring-controlled bell-crank lever 20 which is actuated by a cam 18 at each revolution of the wheel 17. A second cam 19 acts upon a lever 23 and closes the clutch 25<a> so that the rotation of the wheel 25 is communicated to the feed-roller L. The wheel 17 is driven from the axis of the machine through worm gearing 10, 11 and variable belt, chain, or spur gearing 12. The feed-roller L is arranged in a hopper W and coacts with a spring plate 34, Fig. 8, and a wiper plate 36. The discharge of the lint by the air current passing through the outlet M is assisted by a roller 37, having a scraper 38. The rubbers K are limited in their outward movement by grooves 6, Fig. 6, in the lateral flanges D into which the edges of the rubbers enter, and the loose end of the rubbers is secured by one or more studs to which the rubbers are attached by wires passing through longitudinal holes in the studs. The central portion of the rubbers is supported by circumferential flanges which may have a rubber ring on the edge, or by springs 33, and the rubbers may be wired to the supports. Instead of timing the passage of the seeds through a single machine, a series of machines may be employed through which the seeds are passed successively.
