Gins; burring-apparatus; cleaners. -The material is fed intermittently from a hopper b down a shoot, of which one side is formed by the side f of the hopper and the other by a sieve i, which carries prongs k at its lower end and is oscillated about its pivots j towards and from the ginning- rollers h. The bolls are drawn from the hopper by prongs a, which project through a grid on the underside of the hopper and are caused to move in the curved path shown in dotted lines. The pronged sieve i is moved towards the ginning-roller against the action of a spring by a bent lever 3, 6, of which the arm 6 rests on the rising and falling lever 5 of the clearing- comb 13. The action of the vibrating sieve may be assisted by jets of air forced through a perforated pipe o ; or the effect of the vibrating sieve may be produced by the jets of air alone. The clearing-comb is provided with curved and rounded teeth, and is carried by the arms 5, 11, of which the arm 11 may be adjusted on the oscillating shaft 58 operated by the cam 56 and a spring. The knifebar is provided with an edge of hard metal, and is oscillated against the action of a spring by a face-cam on the shaft 2 of the ginning-roller. The ginning- roller is made by covering a cylinder or tube with cards formed by inserting steel wires or bristles into a suitable foundation, and filling up the spaces between the teeth with a composition composed of glue, whiting, saccharin, and linseed oil. The fibre is removed from the ginning- roller by a card-covered roller 18, which is doffed by an oscillating combi 37. A rotating roller carrying series of brushes may be substituted for the doffing-roller 18. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 show the forms of teeth which may be used in place of the saw-toothed discs of the usual saw gin. They resemble the teeth of an ordinary hair comb, and may be straight, bent, or curved as shown.
