Abstract

69. Pratt, C. R. Dec. 31, 1910, [Convention date]. Revolving-cylinder and reciprocating-piston type; inclined-shaft type; expansion, varying. -In revolving-cylinder engine of the inclinedshaft type, the cut-off is controlled by plates or valves adjusted by hand or automatically. The cylinder barrel 12 is supported centrally by a stud 13 and by a shoulder 14, and is held up to the valve seat by means of a screwed ring 15 in the manner described in Specification 23,547/10, [Class 102 (i), Pumps, &c.]. A pin 23 projects from the barrel 12, and has a ball and socket joint with the disk 17 secured to the main shaft 11. The disk 17 and barrel 12 are connected by bevel-gearing as in the above Specification to ensure synchronous rotation. The cylinder end is provided with separate inlet and exhaust chambers 29, 30. The inlet chamber 29 is provided with an adjustable disk cut-off valve 38, which, in the arrangement shown, is controlled by a differential governor. The valve 38 is provided with teeth 42 which engage a worm 43 on a shaft 44 supported in auxiliary brackets 45 on the side of the engine frame. Loose bevel-wheels 48, 49 are mounted upon the shaft 44 and engage pinions 47 mounted upon a rod 46 secured to the shaft 44. The wheel 48 is rotated through toothed gearing by the shaft 11, and the wheel 49 by means of an electric motor 57. Means are provided to insert resistances to decrease the speed or to stop the motor 57 as the valve 38 reaches its maximum opening. The switch 61 is normally held against a stop 63 by a spring 64 and completes the motor circuit through the parts 58, 60. The shaft 44 drives the bevelwheel 65 by worm and toothed gearing. As the wheel 65 rotates, it brings a stop against the switch 61 and moves it first on to the contact 59 to put resistance into the motor circuit and finally into the position shown to break the motor circuit. In one modification, a flat slidevalve operated by a rack controls a number of ports in the admission chamber. In a second arrangement, the ported opening is controlled by a pivoted lift valve. In reversible engines, valves are arranged in both the admission and exhaust chambers, the valves in the exhaust chamber being inoperative until the engine is reversed.
