Abstract

652,637. Rotary engines. ETABLISSEMENTS FOURNIER & MOUILLON. Jan. 15, 1948, No. 1271. Convention date, May 28. 1947. [Class 110(ii)] Two gear-wheel engines operating in series have a. gear 8 meshing with gears 6, 7, full working fluid pressure acting on parts of the gear peripheries, and working- fluid at a lower pressure on other parts of the peripheries. If desired, valve means may be actuated to supply the working-, fluid at high pressure to all parts of the engines, 6, 8:7, 8. The engines may be reversed by moving a lever 85 to rotate plug valves 80, 31 as one unit and reversing the direction of flow of the fluid. The working fluid may be compressed air operating at pressures of 72 lbs. and 36 lbs. per square inch in the respective engine stages. The fluid at high pressure enters a space U and, under control of a valve 49 flows to a space T, and port 131 to the inlet A. As shown by the arrows, Fig. 2, fluid drives gears 6, 8 and passes through ducts B. C. These lead the fluid, at half-pressure to ducts.D, V, F and port 124 to drive gears 7, 8 and ultimately flowing through G, H to atmosphere. The valve 31, for forward drive of the engines, has A as intake and H as exhaust, and the valve 80 intake through the space F and exhaust through the space G. To admit high-pressure fluid to the space V, and thus to the second engine, a lever is moved to rotate a cam 97 and open a valve 94. The admission valve 49 is controlled by a speed governor comprising weights 42, pivoted at 43 to the end of the shaft 19. The heel portions 44 engage a thrust bearing 46 to move the shaft 48 and thus the valve 49 to vary the overlap of fluid-admission ports 52, 51. Within a bush 56 a slide-block 60 is engaged by a spring 55 which follows the slide-block in its rotational and longitudinal movements through a screw-thread formed on the block. An adjusting knob 70 acts through a key 69 to re-position the slide-block. A spring 81 presses apart the valves 31, 80 on to their conical seats Several modifications of the ducts between the inlets and the intermediate admission ports are described in the Specification. A servo-motor comprising a radial vane in a semi-circular cylinder, Fig. 12, (not shown), may be acted on by fluid under pressure which is admitted by a rotary valve under manual control, the motor actuating a rotary valve such as 80.
