Abstract

Rotary machines; embossing; inking-apparatus; printing processes.-A printing-machine for printing the pages of newspapers, magazines, &c. by rotary typographic, lithographic, or off-set lithographic methods, and also from intaglio surfaces or off-set surfaces receiving designs from intaglio cylinders, is so constructed that separate intaglio cylinders, each one page wide, are provided for each side of each page width of web to be printed from such cylinders. As shown in Fig. 1, a wide web of paper f is first steamed from a jet c, dried by a roller d and then printed typographically on both sides by couples a, b. Slitters e then slit the web into sections a page wide, and the webs to be printed in intaglio are led to separate intaglio printing-cylinders g, each web being passed through two such cylinders if it is required to be printed on both sides. The webs are then, if desired, printed typographically by additional couples h and are then associated and delivered. In a modification a singlewidth web is separated from a wide web, and after being printed in intaglio is associated with the main web which is printed typographically only. In all cases the intaglio cylinders may be arranged in any order so that in some cases the webs may be printed from the intaglio cylinders before the typographic ones. The intaglio cylinders may transfer to off-set cylinders which print on the webs; and coloured effects may be obtained by spraying colour direct on to the intaglio cylinders or on to the off-set cylinders. Lithographic cylinders may replace any or all of the typographic ones. The intaglio printing - cylinders are preferably mounted in the manner described in Specification 19,328/11. In modifications, one full width impression cylinder may co-act with typographic or lithographic off-set printing-cylinders and also with narrow width intaglio cylinders, arranged as shown in Fig. 6, in which four sets n, n<1>, n<2>, n<3> of single width intaglio cylinders are arranged to print three colours on each section of a four width web. The intaglio cylinders may be inked by rollers similar to the ordinary ductor rollers of typographic inking- apparatus, or ink may be sprayed thereon.
