Abstract

20,749. Kosstovitch, O. Sept. 19. Lumber.-Composite boards, slabs, plates, &c. consisting of layers of wood glued or otherwise cemented together with their grain crossing are placed in an auxiliary press and then compressed in a main press which is only occupied until the desired pressure is obtained, this pressure being then retained by means of the auxiliary press. In the form shown in Fig. 1. the auxiliary press consists of a top plate 10, columns 12, and a bottom plate 11 provided with wheels 15 running on rails 16. When charged, the auxiliary press is run into the main press, in which the layers of wood are subjected to pressure from an hydraulic plunger 4. The wood is then clamped in the auxiliary press by means of nuts 13 on the columns 12, and, after lowering the plunger, the press is run into a tunnel or other drying-chamber. The pressing surfaces of the main press correspond in shape to the surfaces of the top plate 10 and bottom plate 11. The wood layers may be dried before the application of adhesive by first subjecting them to pressure from the main press in the auxiliary press to squeeze out a large proportion of the moisture, then clamping them in the auxiliary press to retain the pressure, and finally running the auxiliary press into the drying tunnel or chamber.
