Abstract

Rotary sieves.-Apparatus for sifting coffee comprises two rotary cylinders a, b, Figs. 1 and 2, mounted one above the other on rollers e and divided into sections having dished or countersunk perforations of different sizes. Paddles l secured to longitudinal angle-irons m fastened to division plates are provided to pass the coffee along the cylinders, and rotary brushes o keep the cylinders clean. The first section a<1> of the upper cylinder is perforated so that about one-half of the charge introduced by means of the hopper h falls through and is conveyed by a conveyer to a shoot k leading to the lower cylinder b. The coffee from the sections a<2>, a<3> of the upper cylinder mingles with that from the sections b<3>, b<6>, respectively, of the lower cylinder, while the coffee from the section a<4> of the upper cylinder mingles with the tailings of the lower cylinder. The cylinders are driven by adjustable chain-gearing d from the conveyer shaft j<1>, and a retaining-roller r keeps the cylinder b in place. Instead of two cylinders, a single long cylinder may be used.
