Portable turning - apparatus. - Cast - metal brake shoes for use with car wheels are provided with hard-metal inserts which are arranged to provide cutting-edges for trueing the wheels, and are constructed so as to be of substantially uniform width throughout their depth. Figs. 2 and 3 show a brake shoe adapted for use with a flanged car wheel, and provided with inserts 7, 8 the sides of which are serrated; as shown in Fig. 3, so as to hold the inserts in position without giving much variation in the width of the working face of the insert as the block wears away. The inserts 7, as shown in Fig. 2, are preferably triangular, having the pointed end near the flange of the wheel, although the sides 7<a>, 7<b> may be pointed similarly to the ends 8<a>, 8<b> of the lozenge-shaped inserts 8 which are arranged in the groove 6 of the shoe.
