Abstract

13,607. McGonigle, T. G. June 7. Fixed-abutment type; packing vanes and abutments; valve-gear.-Relates to a reversible rotary engine having sliding - rocking vanes working in chambers of arc-shaped cross-section. The engine comprises two working cylinders 10, 11, the end covers of which are recessed to form eccentric bearings for the rotors 14. Each rotor is made up of two sections 16, 17, which are bolted together and fitted with an annular projection 15. The point where this projection engages the top of the casing is packed by a spring bridge-piece 54 connecting packing- rings 48 arranged on either side of the pro jection. Mounted concentrically within each casing on a shaft 23 is a packed vane 24 which projects through a slot in the rotor and slides on rollers 41 carried by a packed rocking piece 30 pivoted in the slot. Steam from a chest 60 is admitted to ports 58 or 59 according to the position of the reversing-valves 62, the exhaust being received by chambers 90. Cut-off valves 71 are oscillated by eccentrics 79<a> secured to the shaft 23. The extent of the oscillation may be varied by moving the lever 88, Fig. 3, which adjusts the position of one end of the link 82 connecting the eccentric rods 80 with the rods 79 actuating the cranks 74 on the valve spindles.
