Grates.-A cinder-sifting grate, which may form part of or may be fitted in a fire-place, consists of an open box or frame A with a grid B, which can be reciprocated transversely by a central lever D, or by a lever fitted in the jamb at the side of the fire-place and having its inner end connected by a link to the side of the grid B. The grid B is supported by lugs G on the feet F of the frame A, or by cross-bars passing from back to front through the feet. Cross-bars C above the grid prevent the fuel from moving with it. For drawing- room and like fires, the frames are irregular in shape; filling-pieces may be used to adapt such a frame to a kitchen-range or other rectangular fire-place.
