Abstract

11,912. Williams, F. C. May 17. Actuating.-In apparatus for automatically stopping railway cars or trains when passing a signal at " danger," the steam-regulating valve is adapted to be controlled by the pressure in the brake system. The operation of the valve 35 for cutting off the motive power is effected by the admission of air past the valve 58 to a pipe 101 and cylinder 100, the piston 99 of which operates a valve 98 so as to open a cylinder 93, Figs. 2 and 4, to atmosphere. A piston detent 94 in the cylinder 93 is then forced down by a spring so as to become released from engagement with a notched disk 91, which is then free to rotate and allows the throttle 35 to be closed by the steam pressure acting thereon. The disk 91 is rotatably mounted on a frame 92 connected to a handlever 105, by means of which the throttle is normally controlled through rods 88, 90 and a lever 89.
