Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In a screwoperated lift valve, the valve member is formed by a cylindrical projection C' on a diaphragm C clamped to the casing A by a bonnet B so as to leave a free portion of the diaphragm between the casing and the projection. The projection is fitted with a hard core D, either solid or chambered, and is protected externally by a cylindrical metal sheath E. The actuating- screw F is adapted to bear against the hard core.
