Abstract

1137. Greatorex, W. H. Jan. 15. Sliding valves. - A screw - actuated sliding valve in which the valve is pressed against its seating by fluid pressure has the sliding member so constructed that the valve seatings are not left exposed to the action of the fluid. In the sliding member 10, actuated by the hand-wheel 11, is formed a through aperture, the diameter of which is greater than that of the passages 1, 2, and in this aperture a doublefaced valve is situated. The valve comprises a drum 17, one end of which forms or carries a valve face 19 and a cylindrical block 21 with lugs 22, against which bears a ring 23, separated by packing from the ring 24 forming the second. valve face. The block 21 is provided with ports 25 to admit fluid to the annular recess 18, whereby the valve faces are pressed outwards against their seats. The sliding member 10 has a forked extension 12, between the arms of which slides a spring-operated plunger 13 provided with flanges 15. As the valve is opened, the sliding member 10 is followed by the plunger 13 until the flanges 15 contact with the casing, in which position the plunger protects the lower portion of the seatings; while, when the valve is fully opened, the upper part of the extension 12 protects the remaining portion of the seatings. The posts 7 are marked at 26 to indicate the minimum desirable opening of the valve.
