8297. Saxton, C. D. April 3. Direct steam-pressure apparatus, automatic. -In a combined steam pressure and vacuum apparatus for raising water, pressure generated by a tubular flash boiler 21 is transmitted through a pipe 18 to a tank 10, thus forcing the water in the latter into a storage tank 15 through a pipe 14. As the pressure in the tank 10 falls, a spray of water enters near the top through a small pipe 22 supplied from the tank 15, resulting in a rapid condensation of the steam, which in its turn causes water to be raised by atmospheric pressure in the pipe 11 and through a valve 12. The pipe 11 is fitted with an air-inlet valve 13, which maintains an air trap at the top of the tank 10 and in the pipe 18. Water to the boiler 21 is fed through pipes 22, 24, the former of which dips below the tank 10; or alternatively a by-pass leading to the small tank 20, which is in effect a steam dome, may be fitted to the pipe 22 somewhat below the level of the tank 20.
