Arc lamps; arc lamp electrodes.-In an enclosed flame-arc lamp, gases from the arc circulate repeatedly through a chamber C and through metallic tubes D<1> connecting the top and bottom of the chamber, while a small quantity of gas is led from the chamber or from one tube D<1> to the lower part of the inner globe T' by a tube B passing outside an outer globe T<2>. The gas rising from the arc and that returning from the tubes D<1> enter the chamber C through concentric funnels F<1>, F<2>. Instead of being in line, the electrodes may be parallel or inclined to each other, in which case they may be carbon slabs held at their lower ends and carrying chemicals on their outer surfaces.
