Abstract

2286. Garsed, J. L. Jan. 30. Vices.-The vice nut 12 is mounted or formed 'in a slide 10 which is adapted to be traversed by means of an auxiliary right and left handed screw actuated by the operating-screw 7 for accelerating the movement of the sliding jaw. The slide 10 is square and is embraced by a correspondingly-shaped socket 9 carried by the bed-plate 3. The auxiliary screw 14 threads into the slide 10 and a nut 17 carried by a lug 18 on the bed-plate, and is rotated by a diamond-shaped head 19 on the screw 7 engaging V-grooves 20 in the hollow of the screw 14. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, a longitudinal head 21 is formed in the interior of the screw 14 adapted to be engaged by the camshaped head 19 so as to allow the screw 7 to make a partial revolution before the auxiliary screw 14 is rotated. In a further modification the screw 7 may be put into or out of engagement with the screw 14 at any time by substituting for the head 19 an expanding head operated by a Bowden wire or other suitable means. In another modification the vice nut may be mounted in a backwardly - extending slide, the rear end of which is engaged by one end of the auxiliary screw the other end of which is engaged by the vertical lug 18, the auxiliary screw being rotated by the operating screw through milled or fluted wheels or rack and worm gearing.
