A further object is to provide means of mounting a worm cog screw upon the stationary part or head of the wrench whereby the worm cog screw is normally, but, yieldingly maintained in engagement with the cog teeth formed in the shoe of the movable jaw which permits the worm cog screw to be withdrawn from engagement with the cog teeth at the will of the user to afford facilities for quick and rapid adjustment of the movable jaw with respect to the stationary jaw.
A further object of this invention consists in forming a guideway in the head and stationary jaw of the wrench which intersects 'with' a right angularly related aperture having a worm cog screw arranged therein, and which is adapted to engage the cog teeth of the movable jaw to impart movement thereto, said movable jaw being fitted to the guideway in such a manner as to permit its withdrawal and reversal from the guideway, in order to present a face suitable for manipulating pipes or a face suitable for manipulating nuts as desired 40 by the user.
A further object is to pivotally secure a worm cog screw on the head of a wrench in such"a manner as to' permit it to cooperate with cog teeth formed in a movable jaw, the worm cog screw being arranged to be pivoted to insure proper mesh of the cog teeth and worm cog screw at all times when it is being manipulated for the purpose intende'd.
These and other objects are attained by the construction of the wrench as illustrated -in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench partly in section, showing my invention applied .to a side jaw wrench, the cog teeth of the movable jaw and worm cog screw be- Specification of Letteis Patent.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing a modified form of the invention, the worm cog screw being arranged to be permanently engaged with the c g teeth of the shoe. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawing reference numeral 1 represents the head, 2 the stationary jaw, and 3 the handle of the wrench. The head is provided with a guideway 4r. to slidably receive a shoe 5, which is attached or made integral with a movable jaw 6. An opening 7 is formed in the head in right angular relation to the guideway and cou'miunicates therewith. ()ne of the walls of the opening 7 is preferably provided with a. slot 8 to receive one end of a spindle 9 which is pivoted to a pin 10, thereby permitting the spindle to be oscillated from the axis of the pin, but preventing it from moving in any other direction.
A worm cog screw 11 is mounted upon the free end 9 of the spindle for rotation and it is adapted to be normally forced into mesh with the cog teeth 12 formed in the shoe by a coil spring 13, which is compressed in a suitable aperture, leaving one end exerting a tension against the spindle in close proximity to the pin 10. The movable jaw (3 is 'irovided with two faces, one face 14- is formed flat for use in manipulating nuts and the like. and the other face is inclined and ]')l'()\'l(l0(l with a series of teeth 15 for use in manipulating pipes or the like.
Tn the type shown in Fig. 3 the spindle 0 is provided with a threaded end which engages a threaded aperture in one of the walls surrounding the aperture 7, the worm cog screw being constantly maintained in mesh with the cog teeth as the spindle 9 has no pivoted radial movement from the axis of the pin 10. Vhcn it is desired to reverse the momble jaw to use it either for a pipe wrench or a nut wrench, the worm screw is manipulated until the cog teeth of the shoe are disengaged therefrom, and the movable jaw is then withdrawn from the guideway and again inserted in the guideway thereby presenting the desired face to the work.
Attention is called to the fact that the structure described provides a combined pipe and nut wrench requiring no additional parts, or attachmentflo perform both functions. In the type shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the adjustment'of the movable jaw can be screw engaging cog teethformed in the shoe of a movable aw, therefore, said construction is not claimed broadly. but applicant does claim the means shown for qmclcly and rapidly adjusting the movable jaw with respect to the stationary jaw and the arrangement ofreversing the movable and separable jaw and its operating mechanism as specifically pointed out and defined in the claims appended hereto.
Attention is called to thefact that the spring in exerting a pressure upon the spindle performs a dual function, that is, it yieldingly forces the worm cog screw to mesh with the cog teeth. and it at the same time forces and keeps the worm cog screw and cog teeth constantly in frictional con tact with each other, thereby preventing the worm cog screw from turning and changing the adjustment of the movable jaw.
I claim j 1. In a wrench provided with a stationary jaw, an integral head and handle, said head having a guideway formed therein and an angularly related aperture crossing said guideway and communicating therewith, a pin secured to said head, a spindle pivotally secured for oscillation to said pin. a worm cog screw loosely mounted on said spindle,
in combination with a double-faced movable, separable and reversible jaw having a shoe provided with cog teeth, said shoebeing adapted to be inserted in the guideway to slidably engage the guideway and mesh with the worm cog screw, and yielding means arranged between the pin and worm screw which is adapted to exert a pressure on the spindle to normally maintain-the worm cog :screw in mesh with thejcog teeth I 2. In a. wrench comprising an integral stationary jaw head and handle, said head being proyided with an open guideway and an angularly related opening which crosses said guideway and communicates therewith, a pin secured to said head, a spindle having one end fitted within a slot formed in one of the walls surrounding saidopening which is pivotally secured for oscillation to said pin,
a worm cog screw mounted for rotation on the free end of said spindle, in combination with a double-faced movable, separable and reversible jaw provided with a series of cog teeth, and which can be slidably inserted in said guideway to engage the worm cog screw, and yielding means arranged between the pin and worm screw which is adapted to exert a pressure on the spindle to normally maintain the worm cog screw in mesh with the cog teeth of the movable jaw.
