Abstract

1466. Bosworth, W. P. Jan. 19. Circular-saw machines; machine saws.-Relates to a machine for cutting-up into sections an elongated body such as a heel log, and of the type comprising a rot a r y work - holder, through which the work is intermittently f e d, and a circular saw adapted to be moved transversely to the work-holder, and near the end thereof to sever the sections, suitable means being also employed to clamp t h e work in its holder during the cutting operation. The saw 53 is provided with a bevelled cutting - edge 53<b> to minimize the waste of material in saw - dust and to assist in deflecting outwards the severed section. The cutter may rotate on a fixed axis and be cam-shaped to secure a progressive cutting action, or it may be circular in shape and mounted on pivoted arms which are swung gradually towards the work during the cutting operation. The work-holder comprises journaled disk portions 17 connected by longitudinal rods 18 provided with cross-bars 19 supporting adjustable work-guides 20, 21, which are so shaped as to ensure the rotation of the work within the holder. The work is pushed intermittently through the holder by a follower 45 connected to a rack 46 provided with oblique teeth 47, which are successively engaged and advanced by an oblique dog 49 on a revolving arm 48. Apparatus for clamping the work during the cutting operation comprises a shoe 27 which coacts with the guide 20 to clamp the work in the vicinity of the saw 53. The shoe 27 is carried by the work-holder and is actuated to effect the clamping and releasing of the work by a sliding wedge-piece 29, the reciprocations of which are controlled by the alternate engagement with a stud 30 thereon of cam levers 35, 36 carried on rock-shafts 33, 34 respectively, actuated automatically from the saw-spindle 26.
