Cells; arrangement; moving electrodes.-An hermetic cover, for a primary cell which is inverted for use, consists of a disk 12 of rubber or equivalent material surmounted by a stiff disk 7, which may be of ebonite, and is secured on the cell neck by mechanical means such as a flanged metal sleeve 19, held by screwing. As shown, the sleeve 19 bears upon a lead plate 10, covered in the centre by an ebonite piece 11, but, according to the Provisional Specification, a single ebonite top piece is used instead of the parts 10, 7, 11, and the sleeve may be held by a bayonet-joint or by inclined projections. Electrodes.-A carbon electrode 2 and a zinc electrode 3 are so secured to the above hermetic cover that, on removing the cover, the zinc can be renewed or the cell charged without disturbing the carbon. As shown, the carbon 2, which surrounds the zinc, is clamped below the cover by a flanged bush 6 screwed into a top piece 11, these parts being of an insulating-material such as ebonite. A lead washer may be interposed between the ebonite bush 6 and the carbon. Connexion to the carbon is made by a lead plate 8 below the cover, and a lead stem 9, passing through the cover to a second lead plate 10 in contact with a screwed sleeve 19 which secures the cover and acts as a terminal; or, according to the Provisional Specification, the carbon has a leaden top and the stem 9 passes through the cover, bearing a terminal or being twisted to a connecting - wire, the lead plate 10 being omitted. The zinc 3 is held against a rubber washer by a brass connecting-screw 14 passing through the ebonite bush and bearing a terminal nut, below which are washers, one being of lead
