Abstract

8996. Anson, E., Henderson, J. H., and Eastick, J. C. N. April 14. Arrangement; connexions; connexions to carbons. - In a portable primary cell, a tubular carbon or other negative electrode d is supported by cast lead in a hole punched in a metal cover b, which screws on the cell and forms a terminal. The lead is screw-threaded on the inside to receive an aluminium or other metal plug e, from which it is insulated by ebonite, for instance. The zinc or other positive g is attached to this plug e, either by a screw, as shown, or by a bolt and nut, a rubber washer m being interposed, and is connected by the plug to a metal upper cover j which forms a terminal and fits in the battery box; an ebonite ring supports this upper terminal j and also a rubber washer l which is compressed by the plug e to form a hermetic seal. For series connexion, adjacent terminals are insulated by strips n. If a bolt and nut is used to attach the zinc g to the plug e, the nut presses on a spring strip which crosses the plug and has a stud at eacli end bearing on and connecting with the upper terminal j. Each cell can be finished separately before being placed in the battery box.
