Abstract

27,147. Norton, C. L. Nov. 22. Steam - cutting machines; rolling-machines; processes.- Fibro-cement slabs are formed by first subjecting a dry layer of thoroughly mixed fibre and cement to pressure, then applying water or other suitable setting-liquid, and finally compacting the wet layer under pressure. In apparatus shown in Fig. 2 for carrying out the process, a mixture of asbestos or other suitable fibrous material and cement fed into a hopper H is delivered through an adjustable gate H<1> on to an endless belt B travelling over a table A. The travelling belt carries the mixture under spiral picker rolls S, S<1>, which brush off surplus material and exercise a combing action, and then between two pressure rolls L, U mounted in fixed and adjustable spring bearings respectively. The pressure rolls L, U compress the layer to about one-half its original thickness, and it then leaves the belt A and passes over a bridge-piece E to a second endless belt B', travelling over a second table A'. The endless belt B' carries the material first beneath a cam-operated oscillating water-sprinkler V, and then between pressure rolls L', U' similar to the pressure rolls L, U, where it is again compressed. The compressed layer may then be cut into slabs of the required thickness by a cam-operated cutting-device K, and the slabs are deposited on a table N, from which they can be removed and stacked up in presses with metal sheets interposed between them until they are dry. A scraper x and trough x<1> may be provided to catch any material that may adhere to the roll U. The picker rolls S, S<1> are driven from a pulley P on the main driving-shaft by means of belt gearing p, p<1>, and the rolls L<1>, U<1>, L, U are driven from the main shaft by means of toothed gearing G, G<1>, G<2>, G<3>, G<4>, G<5>. A suitable composition for the slabs is one part by weight of fibre to three parts of cement. The setting of the product may be accelerated and its strength increased by adding from 2 to 10 per cent of finely ground quartz sand.
