Lathe carriers, of the kind in which the work is gripped between a fixed jaw and a pivoted jaw of eccentric form with a toothed periphery, have the teeth on the pivoted jaw formed in two or more series arranged in staggered relation so as to provide a more efficient grip. The invention is described with reference to a pipe wrench. The pivoted jaw b is provided with a flat or hollowed out portion e so that it may be manipulated by the thumb of the hand holding the shank a', and also with a snug b<1>, to which is attached the end of a spring d, normally retaining the jaw in such position that the line passing through the pivot c and the centre of the jaw b is at right-angles to the surface of the fixed jaw a. The pivoted jaw may be formed conveniently as a number of toothed disks, such as f, f<1>, screwed, riveted, or welded together with the teeth arranged in staggered relation.
