Triarylmethane dyes are obtained by introducing one or two benzyl groups into the amino group of the leuco compounds obtained from maminobenzaldehyde or its substitution products and two molecular proportions of an aromatic oxycarboxylic acid (salicylic, o-cresotinic, or 1:2- or 2:3-oxynaphthoic acid, or mixtures thereof), and subsequently oxidizing the benzylated products. The dyes may be sulphonated, or the leuco compounds can be first sulphonated and then oxidized, or may be sulphonated and oxidized in one operation. According to examples, the leuco compound from o-chlor-maminobenzaldehyde and o-cresotinic acid is dibenzylated and oxidized; the same dibenzylated leuco compound is sulphonated and oxidized; the leuco compound from m-aminobenzaldehydeo-sulphonic acid is dibenzylated and oxidized.
