Triarylmethane dyes are obtained by condensing the leuco compounds from aminobenzaldehydes or derivatives thereof and two molecular proportions of aromatic o-oxycarboxylic acids, with chlordinitrobenzenes or their sulphonic acids, such as 1-chlor-2:4-dinitrobenzene, 1:3-dichlor-4:6-dinitrobenzene, 1-chlor-2:6-dinitrobenzene-4-sulphonic acid, 1-chlor-4:6-dinitrobenzene-2-sulphonic acid, and oxidizing the resulting leuco compounds. According to examples, the leuco compounds from o-chlor-maminobenzaldehyde, o-chlor-p-aminobenzaldehyde, or m-aminobenzaldehyde-o-sulphonic acid and o-cresotinic acid, are condensed with 1- chlor-2:4-dinitrobenzene, and the products are oxidized. Salicylic acid and its derivatives, or alpha-oxynaphthoic acid, may be used in the production of the parent leuco compounds, or these leuco compounds may be prepared from two molecules of different o-oxycarboxylic acids. The products dye wool in acid baths shades which become green to black on chroming.
