Abstract

25,225. Smith, D. Oct. 31. [Cognate Application, 29,964/10.] Filters with vertical filtering-partitions. - A filter-tank for sewage or effluent from dyeworks, tanneries, &c., is divided into compartments by a series of hollow lattice - work screens packed w i t h straw and fitting into vertical slides at the side of the tank. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement for treating liquids on a large scale. The lattice-work screens A are of iron divided longitudinally into sections. Each section is hung on chains with counterbalance weights passing round pulleys mounted on vertical brackets L which separate each pair of sections. The brackets L are connected together at the top by longitudinal and transverse tie-rods P, and support roadways Q for attendants. The liquid is admitted to the first compartment of the tank through passages H, the alternate passages being upwardly curved to check the rush of the liquid. The screens A may be strengthened at the back by means of rods which are hung and balanced on the brackets L.
