Abstract

8605. Webb, J. F. April 14. Travelling-band filters.-The apparatus is intended especially for extracting liquid from crushed minerals, and is constructed so that an intermittent vacuum is produced beneath separate sections of the band. The latter, which travels round drums B fixed to a frame C, Fig. 1, is shown in section in Fig. 3. The bottom a of the band is of rubber, above which is a grating of wooden bridges b supporting a layer of coco-nut matting d, and an outer layer of filtering-material e. Certain of the bridges are solid so as to divide the length of the band into sections. A flexible tube G, communicating with the grating spaces and divided into sections corresponding to those of the band, is attached to the side of the latter. The sections of the tube are connected to an exhaust receiver by flexible pipes H and a revolving plate K. The device for the connections is shown in Fig. 5. The ends of the tubes H are attached to a flange P on a sleeve P<1> revolving on the axis Q. Side connections H<1> unite the tubes with a plate S which revolves over a fixed frame R having three sections connected separately by exit pipes N to the exhaust, and a fourth by means of which the vacuum is intermittently released. The lower part of the band, passing through the sludge tank, is submitted to the action of the vacuum, and the solution is drawn through to one of the exits N, while the sludge adheres to the band. The sludge on the section which has left the tank is washed by water distributed over it from the pipes M, the water being drawn through to a second of the exits. To the third exit is drawn moisture from the sludge, which is dried on the descending portion of the baud. The vacuum is released and the dried material leaves the band just before it is about to re-enter the tank. The band is driven from the pulleys F by means of a pinion on the inside of one of the: drums B, and the moving portion of the central device is rotated by means of a telescopic rod B', attached to the band and to the flange P. Rollers D pivoted on bars E support the bands at points between the drums.
