[Cognate Application, 28,995/10.] Tar macadam, plant for making.-In apparatus for drying stone for tar-macadam and for mixing it with tar, the stone is moved from the centre of a rotary chamber to the circumference and from the circumference to the centre by means of spiral partitions. The stone enters the rotary cylinder 1 by a mouthpiece 2 and passes to the circumferential part of a chamber 4, whence it is conveyed by the spiral partition 5 to the centre of the chamber 4. It then passes into the chamber 6, and is conveyed by the spiral partition 7 to the circumferenoe of the chamber, where it passes into a third chamber, and so on. It finally passes into a mixing-chamber 12 dipping into a tar-well and perforated for the entrance of the tar. It is carried to the centre of the chamber 12 by a spiral partition 15, and passes out through a draining-chamber 17. In another form, the spiral partitions are employed in the mixing- chamber only, and the material is conveyed through the drying-chamber and away from the mixing-chamber by screw-blades, which are attached to bars on the walls of the chamber so as to leave a space between the blade and the wall of the chamber. The apparatus is heated by a furnace 21, an external flue 22 and a flue 23 encircling the flue 22 and receiving the furnace gases as a downdraught and delivering them to the upcast 24. A chamber similar to the chamber 12 may be mounted on wheels and employed for the mixing separately from the drying-apparatus.
