17,734. Farbenfabriken vorm. F. Bayer & Co. Sept. 11, 1909, [Convention date]. Caoutchouc.-A substance resembling caoutchouc is prepared by heating isoprene with or without the addition of agents promoting polymerization. In examples given (a) isoprene is heated to 200‹ C. for 10-12 hours, and the resulting mass is treated with steam; (b) isoprene is heated for 6 days at a temperature of 80-100‹ C., and distilled with steam; (c) isoprene is dissolved in benzene and heated to 120‹ C. for 2 days, and the product is distilled in vacuo, and a tough transparent mass remains. The pressure varies from 20 to 4 atmospheres.
