Caoutchouc substitutes are produced by heating bodies of the constitution in which the free valencies are saturated with hydrogen and alkyl groups (except isoprene), or with alkyl groups, or by heating the erythene derivative of the formula in the presence or absence of polymerizing- agents or diluents or solvents. Suitable parent materials are alpha-methylbutadiene, #:gamma-dimethylbutadiene, alpha:alpha-dimethylbutadiene, tetramethyl- and hexamethyl - erythrene. Specifications 15,254/10 and 17,734/10 are referred to. Hexamethylerythrene is prepared by the action of magnesium brommethyl on alpha:#-dimethyl succinic acid ester and treatment of the intermediate product with dehydrating-agents such as oxalic acid.
