Synthetic caoutchouc prodructs obtained from butadienes are heated, with or without preliminary treatment with acid substances, or as described in Specification 975/13 &c., with solid caustic alkali, or solid alkali alcoholate or mixtures thereof with alkaline-earths or alkali carbonates. The products thus become more easily soluble in benzene. They may be subsequently treated with acids, or as described in Specification 975/13, and before or after such further treatment they may be vulcanized. The autopolymerization product of 2:3-dimethylbutadiene, the products obtained from butadienes by the action of alkali metals in the presence of carbon dioxide, and others, are suitable as parent materials. Specifications 29,213/11, 2313/12, 26,550/12, and 8781/13, [Class 70, India-rubber &c.], are also referred to.
