Planes, construction of; steering.-In steering and elevating planes for air-ships and other flying - machines, comprising an open frame 2, 3, 4 elastically supporting a flexible membrane 1, such as described in Specification 2611/10, the side member 4 of the frame is provided with a segmental rack 8 engaged by a pinion 9 cr worm-wheel under the control of the aviator, whereby the frame can be rotated about short laterally-extending axles on the framework 6. Two or more planes arranged parallel to one another are connected by struts 7 so as to move simultaneously. The struts are connected to the front and rear bars 14, Fig. 4, of the frame of the plane by semicircular straps 16 surrounding circular bosses 15 on the bars 14. The side members of the frame may comprise upper and lower bowed members 18, Fig. 3, connected by a cross-strut 19 carrying the pivot pins of the frame. With planes of considerable width, bowed members 18 are arranged at suitable distances apart and pivoted to the vertical struts 6 of the framework, the membrane 1 being formed with apertures for the passage of the struts. Intermediate bowed members, without the connecting cross-strut may connect the front and rear members 2, 3 of the open frame. The membranes may be detachable at one end, in order to be furled or rolled up when not in use.
