Abstract
1,010,396. Flexible wing aircraft. RYAN AERONAUTICAL CO. Dec. 9, 1963, No. 48497/63. Headings B7G and B7W. A flexible wing aircraft comprises a rigid keel 18, two leading edge spars 20 joined to the keel at their forward ends, and flexible wing panels 22, e.g. of rubberized or plastics-coated fabric. The spars are connected to arms 24 pivoted on a spreader arm 14 fixed to the keel and lateral control is effected by pivoting the arms 24 in opposite directions, either by connecting the outer ends of the arms to control cables (Fig. 5, not shown) or, as shown, by making them as bell cranks connected by a tie rod 30 movable through cables 34, 36 driven by a motor 40. A fuselage or container 10 is fixed to masts 12 pivotally mounted at 16 on the spreader arm 14, and pitch control is effected by an extensible rod 27 connecting the load 10 to the keel.
