750. Roe, A. V. Jan. 12. Planes, construction, and arrangement of; framework. - In a flying-machine having two or more twistable superposed planes, which are connected at one edge, say the front, by a rigid frame, and at the other by hinged or flexible struts, the rear part of the central plane or frame M<1> is braced laterally by cords C' connecting struts C' secured to the plane M'. The struts C' may be extended to the upper and lower planes M, M<2>, the parts C<2> being made flexible ; or struts C may be hinged at C' to the struts C<4>. The struts C are connected to the rear edges of the planes by universal joints A. The forward edges of the planes are hinged to a rigid frame B which is stayed by cords B'. The parts of the planes between the joints A, B, Fig. 3, are braced by diagonal stays. Two or more superposed fixed planes may be situated at the rear of the machine. Steering.-The inclination of the planes can be varied, and the lateral extremities of the rear edges twisted relatively to one another, by a pivoted steering-rod E similar to that described in Specification 26,099/06. The lever E is secured to a lever E<1> which is connected through links D<1> to levers D pivoted on brackets k. The outer ends of the levers D are connected by links D<2> to extensions F<1> of the plane M'. By moving the rod E up or down. the inclination of the planes as a whole is varied, while by rotating the rod E by means of a hand-wheel the extremities of the rear part of the planes are turned in opposite directions. A lever E<3> connected to the rod E operates a rear rudder H simultaneously with the warping of the planes.
