8597. Louis, U. April 9. Writing-desks; book &c. rests; leaf-holders.-A writing-desk for use by a person standing or sitting, is provided with adjustable top, footboard, and book-rest, and with a book shelf 7. The adjustable top 8, 10 has a hinged flap 9 to allow access to the fixed receptacle 1, which is also closed by a fixed part 5 and a sliding shutter 6. The uprights 11, carrying the desk top 8, 10 slide in grooved members 12 of the framework, and are clamped in adjusted position by screws 13 engaging fixed nuts 14 and acting on pressure blocks 15 through leafsprings 16 or helical or other springs. The footboard 17, when adjusted vertically and horizontally, is locked in position in engagement with racks 18. A bookrest, having three cross parts 22, 23, 24 connected to two uprights 25, 26 can be supported at any desired distance from the person by inserting the ends of the uprights in inclined holes in the desk top. The bookrest may be supported by a rear hinged stay 33 adjusted by a chain 34 and a hook on the crossbar 23. This cross-bar supports telescoping rods 29, which carry spring leaf-holders 31 having helical parts wound on small cylinders 32.
