Description

J. P. RICHARDS. COMBINED DESK AND CHAIR.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. II. 1920.
Patented Aug. Il, 1922.

COMBNED DESK AND @HAIER Specication ef Letters Patent. Pgjtgmmgd uga L' 3922' Applicationled November 11, 1920. Serial No. 423,326.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that T, JOHN P. RICHARDS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at\ .combined desks and chairs, and more particularly to such as are adapted for school use,-one Aobject of the invention being to provide a simple and substantial structure in which the chair may be adjusted vertically and in which the desk may be readily adjusted either vertically or horizontally with relation to the chair, and in which the desk top may be raised and simultaneously disposed at an angle of approximately fortyfive degrees.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. v
Tn the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view of a combined desk and chair embodyin my improvements; Figure 2 is a view il ustrating the positions of the parts when the desk top is rasedand inclined; Fi re 3 is a sectional view showing the positlons of the links when the desk top is closed, and Figures 4, 5 and 6 are views illustrating various features of construction.
1 re resents one side of a book box or receptac e 2 and projects at one end beyond the latter, and said box may be provided with a hinged cover. To one end portion of the side member l of the book box, a leg 3 is secured and to that portion of the member 1 which projects beyond the box, two uprights 4, 5 are secured and spaced apart, the upright 4 extending downwardly to form a leg 6 and the two uprights extending equal distances above the box 2.
narm 7 on a metal bracket 8 is secured to the side member 1 and projects laterally therefrom, said bracket having at its free end, a depending portion constituting a leg 8a which may be provided at its lower end with feet 9. The bracket 8 is also connected with the side member 1 by means of a brace Fand provided at one side with laterally projecting pins 13 to enter any of a serles of palrs of sockets 14 in the sidev member 1 and thus the chair seat may be connected with said side member in a manner to permit vertical adjustment of the seat. The chair seat is provided at or near its outer side with a depending arm 15 to be disposed alongside the leg portion 8a of a bracket 8 and said larm is made with a plurality of holes 15, vany one of which may receive a bolt to secure the seat adjustably to the leg 8a at any one of a series of holes 8c in the latter.
The spaced uprights 4-5 provide a guideway in which a block 16l is movable, said block being held in any desired position of vertical adjustment by means of a friction clamp 17. This clamp may be made T- shaped of spring metal, the tongue portion being secured to the block 16 and the lateral portions bearing against the uprights 4 5. The pressure with which the clamp bears against the uprights may be regulated and controlled by a thumb screw 18. rThe guide block 16 carries a rectangular block 19 which is movable against the inner faces of the -inner faces of the uprights 4 5, and from the upper end of the block 19, a board 20 projects horizontally,-the connection between said board and block being effected and made rigid by means of braces 21.
The horizontal board 20 affords a support for a desk 22, and said desk is adjustably connected With the support, through the medium of guide strips23 having greater length than the width of the supporting board and secured at their ends to the bottom of the desk, thus permitting the latter to be adjusted horizontally relatively to the chair. l
From the construction and arrangement of parts hereinbefore described, it ls apparent that the chair seat may be adjusted vertically and that the desk ma be adjusted either vertically or horizonta 1y or in both directions.
The majority of the books used by a pupil lclined position to connected.
The desk is provided with a top 24: which is so connected with the ends of the desk that it ma)7 be lraised and disposed 1n an inrFrovide agbook rest, at al 4 single operation. o permit such manipulation of the desk top, the latter is connected with the body of the desk in the manner now to be described.
Angle pieces 25 are securedto the under side of the desk top 24and toeach of these angle pieces two links 26-27 are pivotally zThese links are pivoted at their lower ends to the ends of the desk and are bent intermediate of their ends, so that the lower portions will be offset relativel to the upper portions and the links permltted to assume the positions shown in Figure 3 when the top is closed down upon the desk body. It will be observed that the pivotal connections of the links of each pair with the desk top are closer together than the pivotal connections of said links with the desk body. With such constructions, the desk top may be raised and caused simultaneous y to assume an inclined position at an angle of approximately forty-live degrees, suitable to provide a book rest.
Various changes might be'made in the details of construction ,of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myse f to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as' new and `desire .to secure by Let ters-Patent, is
1 The combination with a side member having a plurality ofy sockets, and an upright secured to said side member, of a .bracket secured .to said side member and having'a leg ortion,'a chair seat disposed over said brac et and provided with a pin to enter any of said sockets, lan arm depending from said chair seat and adjustably conl nected with the leg portion of said bracket and a desk sup orted by said upright.
2.` The com ination with supportin means including arallel uprights, of a bloc movable vertical between said`uprights,\a block secured to t e vertically movable block and movable against the inner faces of said uprlghts, a clamp secured to the first-mentioned block and engaging the outer-faces of said uprights, a horizontal desk-supportin member secured to one of said blocks, a desk mounted to slide on said member, and stri s secured to said desk and passing under said member.
yIn testimony whereof, I have-signed this specification 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
