Abstract

7766. Fabry, R. March 31. - Ammonium sulphate.-Coal gas is cooled to separate tar and either no water or enough water to condense a part of the fixed ammonium salts, say two-thirds. The gas is then passed into a saturator containing acidified ammonium sulphate, the saturator being preferably provided with a heat-retaining cover. The gas from the saturator containing some hydrochloric and sulphurous acids from the remainder of the fixed ammonia in the gas, is then passed into a washer containing spent ammoniacal liquor containing excess of lime, which may be that formed by the distillation of the ammoniacal condensate obtained by the preliminary cooling. If no condensate was thus obtained, milk of lime is used for the final washings The ammonia obtained by the above distillation is returned to the hot crude gas.
