Mechanical stoking. - Stoking-devices operatively connected with the furnace door ensure the delivery of the green fuel in front of, and separate from, the incandescent fuel, and also push the fuel towards the bridge. Two multiple-prong forks 2, 3 are mounted in the roof of the furnace on shafts 4, 5 connected by linkage with two arms 8, 9 on the fire-door hinge-pin. The fork 2 is operated from the firedoor through a positive connexion, the fork 3 by a tappet 15 acting in opposition to a counterweight 16. On opening the fire-door through a right-angle, the fork 2 descends to a vertical position, the fork 3 still remaining in its normal horizontal position. On further opening the door, the fork 2 rises to the horizontal, which the fork 3, under the action of the tappet 15, descends to the vertical. On closing the door, the reverse motions take place. The linkage is enclosed within a recess out of reach of the direct heat of the fire.
