Abstract

3739. HõrdÚn, J. Feb. 15. Cast - iron and scrap processes. - An open hearth or other gas-heated furnace or a converter, provided with resistive plate electrodes, is charged with pig iron and scrap, and heated by gas and air admitted through openings D for melting, decarburizing and dephosphorizing, rolling-mill scale, ore and lime being added and slags being removed as usual. For desulphurizing and deoxidizing, electric heat may be employed for regulating the temperature, the gas supply being maintained constant. For removing opcluded gases, the furnace is closed, the gas being stopped, and the charge first allowed to cool almost to its solidifying point, and then rapidly heated electrically up to casting temperature. Specifications 18,523/08 and 26,251/09, [Class 39 (iii), Heating by electricity], and 26,266/09 are referred to.
