Abstract

3630. Grouchetzky, N. Feb. 14. Docks.-Existing dry docks are utilized for ships of larger draft by providing for the removal of the keel blocks so that they are not in place when the ship enters the dock, the centre of the dock being slightly deepened to take the block - removing gear. The keel blocks are connected with each other by short links and by ropes 8 with a capstan 7 which hauls the blocks to the slipway 9 up the centre of the dock where they are attached to carriages 15. When a ship enters the dock, the blocks are placed in a side gallery or on one of the steps. The level of water in the dock is then raised above the level outside sufficient for the weighted keelblocks to be hauled into position. On pumping out, the ship settles on the blocks, the keel being higher than when the ship was first floated into dock.
