Abstract
2182. Fauber, W. H. Jan. 28. Propeller shafts, arrangement of; rudders.-Comprises means for supporting the propeller shafts of high-speed boats, more particularly hydroplane boats. The propeller shaft d is extended beyond the propeller d' and carried in a bearing d<2>, the after end of which is pivoted to the rudder a, by the pin a<9>. The rudder blade is in one with the post a<2> and consists of a plate a provided with a broad head a<1>. The rudder-post a<2> is provided at its upper end with a supporting-bracket b<1>, having springs a<6> bearing against its upper and lower faces and against collars a<3>, a<4>. By this means, vibrations and shocks may be prevented. In a modification, the upper part of the rudder is made hollow, the rudder is carried below the axis of the propeller shaft and the bearing is supported by a bracket from the stern. In this form, the forward edge of the rudder above the shaft is bevelled in one direction, and the portion below the shaft in the opposite direction.
