Abstract
28,183. Brandes, W. Dec. 2, 1908, [Convention date]. Blowpipe burners.-In a blowpipe or oxyacetylene burner for cutting and welding metals, the cutting-nozzle is adapted to act as a mixing- nozzle when the burner is being used for welding. The welding-nozzle 4 is adapted to be screwed on in front of the cutting-nozzle 3. Oxygen is delivered by a duct 2, and the combustible gas, such as acetylene, by a duct 1, to a mixing-chamber 9 in the welding-nozzle. In order to use the burner for cutting, the nozzle 4 is taken off, and a valve 6 is open to admit oxygen to a nozzle 5, which discharges it into the duct 1. Thus an annular jet of mixed acetylene and oxygen is burned at the nozzle 3 to heat the metal, and a central jet of oxygen delivered by the duct 2 serves to sever the metal, The supply of oxygen is regulated by a valve 7. A cooling-chamber 12 is formed around the mixing-chamber 9, and is filled through orifices 11 by dipping the nozzle into water. The part 8 of the nozzle 3 may be formed integral with the nozzle 4, in which case an interchangeable cutting-nozzle is provided. According to the Specification in the original form, as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), special nozzles 4 are provided for welding thin and thick metal, the oxygen being supplied respectively by the nozzle 5 and by the valve 7. In this case the nozzle 5 and valve 7 are adjusted to the requirements of the respective welding-nozzles. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
