Abstract

25,191. Gardner, J. Nov. 2. Subaqueous sound signals. - In receiving- apparatus, the microphones F are mounted on the tuned metal ring A, which is carried by the diaphragm C on the side of the ship. The ring is tuned by the weight G or by a tension screw. The inertia microphones may be replaced by a single microphone of carbon balls or of carbon pencil. The diaphragm is attached to the ship by screws D or by springs. To indicate the receipt of signals, the microphones are in circuit with a harmonic relay M, as shown in Fig. 8. The strip N breaks contact at O, and the relay arm Q closes the alarm circuit. There may be one microphone set on each side of the ship, a switch being provided to put them in circuit with the receiver alternately. A telephone head-set with receivers carried on a spring yoke may be employed. To eliminate local disturbances a resistance may be included in the telephone circuit, so adjusted as to prevent them from actuating the receiver; or the receiver diaphragm may be spaced from its magnet for this purpose. Specifications 7565/06, 7654/06, 11,021/06, 6253/07, and 16,472/07 are referred to.
