Circular machines.-Ribbed seamless hosiery in two styles of ribs, such as two-and-one rib changing to four-and-one rib is produced automatically by means of a set of dial cams working in conjunction with long and short butted needles suitably arranged. When the change is desired, the long-butted needles are withdrawn from knitting, and their cast off loops are prevented from running down by being knocked over on to a fine splicing-thread the loops of which are burst by the withdrawal of the long - butted needles into the inactive position. The outthrow cam 2, which can be swung inwards on a pivot 7 during the formation of the welt, carries a second cam 10 rocking on a pivot 11. The long-butted needles are deflected inwards by a half-thickness cam 17 and remain in the idle track during the production of four-and-one rib. When it is desired to change back to two-andone rib, the long-butted needles are again deflected into the knitting-track by a switch cam 16. The cams 16, 17 are suitably connected together so that as either one is moved into engagement with the long-butted needles the other is withdrawn.
