Pivoted-sliding windows.-In windows having sashes pivoted to sliding stiles, the meeting edges of the sashes 8 and stiles 5 are rabbeted as shown in Fig. 5, the sashes being pivoted on pins 11 passing through washers 13, 14 secured on the sliding stiles and sashes respectively. The sashes, when closed, are fastened to the sliding stiles by bolts, and when the sashes are turned down, the sliding stiles are prevented from rising by the engagement of spring catches 19 with notches 24 in the beads of the frame. The catches 19 are pivoted in casings 18 to which the cords 17 are attached, and at their lower ends are provided with members 25 projecting into the grooves of rabbeted stiles 5, so that when the sashes are closed the tongues 9 of the rabbeted sash stiles 8 press against the projections 25, thereby releasing the catches. The sashes may be held slightly open by means of hooked stays 27 pivoted at 31 to the upper sash-rails, which are recessed to receive the stays when not in use. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 6881/87.
